Comparing plant based “meat” products

Since I am trying to eat mostly plant based foods Ive been experimenting with different types of meat replacements. There is so much to pick from nowadays and Im excited about it.

Obviously Beyond burgers a popular right now and with good reason, those babies are tasty! So I bought some other Beyond products and also some Gardein products to try out. Here are the results:

What I tried:

  • Beyond Meat
  • Beyond Beef Crumbles
  • Beyond Spicy Italian Sausage
  • Tofurky Peppered Sandwich Slices
  • Gardein Fishless filets
  • Trader Joe’s Tempeh
  • Trader Joe’s Meatless Breakfast Sausage
  • Trader Joe’s Soyrizo
  • Gardein Chick’n Scallopini
  • Gardein Chick’n Strips
  • Verisoy Vegan Shrimp

BEYOND MEAT $8.99 @Albertsons

The ground beef style Beyond meat cooked up nice. It actually tastes just like the burgers. Fat is high at 18g but thats the same as the burgers.

Very good but for the price point Ill buy the Beyond patties at Costco and just chop up myself :)…….APPROVED!

BEYOND BEEF CRUMBLES $4.49@walmart

I saw these while perusing through Walmart and decided to try them since they were cheap and only 3g of fat compared the Beyond meat.

I made sloppy joes with them. They arent horrible but I like the Beyond meat better. Oddly enough my husband preferred these to the Beyond meat because they dont have the smoky flavor like Beyond burgers/meat have. I will buy them again but suggest eating them within other things like a casserole or sauce. APPROVED!

BEYOND SPICY ITALIAN SAUSAGE $8.99@Albertsons

These cooked up so nice, smelled just like sausage, and tasted just like sausage. The fat content is less than a Johnsonville sausage too! Husband and Daughter loved them too. I will definitely buy these again. They have regular and sweet flavors in addition to the spicy. APPROVED!!

TOFURKY PLANT BASED PEPPERED DELI SLICES $4@Sprouts

Everyone was scared to try this lol. But we went ahead and sampled it by itself first and then in a sandwich. WOW! Pleasantly surprised it tastes just like peppered turkey. Same consistency and everything. (I did watch a review that said the hickory flavor was gross so Im steering clear of that one.) APPROVED!

GARDEIN FISHLESS FILETS $3.99@Sprouts

I was so surprised with these, they were so good! Taste like fish filets and I love them. Ive eaten them by themselves and also made “fish” tacos out of them. APPROVED!

TRADER JOE’S MEATLESS BREAKFAST SAUSAGE $2.99

These cooked up nice and were really crispy. My husband really liked them and I liked them at first, but then I really didnt like them. If I buy them again I will be getting them for him, not me. So I guess I would say that these are NOT APPROVED!

TRADER JOE’S SOYRIZO $2.99

I was skeptical at first about this Chorizo because Ive had some bad soy chorizo before. Since Trader Joe’s continuously stocks this brand I figured it must be good. I was right! It is so good. It comes in a plastic sleeve similar to other chorizo brands and crumbles really nicely. Ive made quiche with it, breakfast tacos, and regular tacos. APPROVED!

Gardein Chick’n Scallopini $3.99@Sprouts

These are very good and taste just like chicken. Even the husband likes them. APPROVED!!

Morning Star Farms $3.94 @Albertsons

I think out of all the ground beef substitutes Ive had, this one is my favorite. It only has 2g of fat and tastes just like ground beef. APPROVED!!

Gardein Chick’n Strips $3.99@Sprouts

These are really good, I like eating them with my cauliflower fried “rice” so good and tastes like chicken. Look how pretty they brown. APPROVED!!!

Verisoy Vegan Shrimp $5.49@Asian Marketplace

These taste and look like shrimp. We really liked them. The only thing I dont like is that there isnt any protein. They taste great in a stir fry and you can find them at any local Asian market. APPROVED!

I hope you all enjoyed the reviews above. I know I dont like to buy things unless I know they are good, especially this type of stuff that can be hit or miss. I’ve been cooking all the stuff above during our social distancing and haven’t been disappointed!
