Setting Up The New Traeger Smoker

There’s nothing like the melt in your mouth sensation of smoked meats. Yes, you can purchase them at restaurants but when you have the opportunity to have them at someone’s house from their smoker, you cant beat it.

So I was strolling through Costco the other day and the Traeger people were set up with a special. These guys were so nice and the smokers were a pretty good price compared to other places.

So I broke down and got one. . . .

Purchasing the Trager

I didnt need the biggest one so I bought the mid size ‘Silverton 620.’

I bought a couple bags of wood pellets: Cherry and Hickory and they threw in some chicken seasoning and a free outdoor cover. Pretty nice!

Putting it Together

This thing is super heavy so getting it off the truck was kind of rough. But I managed with some help from some friends. It came with all the tools you need, even a screwdriver.

I left it in the box and put most of it together like that. It was basically just attaching the legs and bottom compartment.

After that you just stand it up and put the other pieces in place. Was pretty easy and didnt take long.

Next I set up the Wifi and paired the grill with the Traeger app. This app is amazing, you can track everything from it. It has recipes with step by step instructions, timers, grill and prob heat alarms, and you can control it from the app which makes it very safe.

Before use you must season the grill. The instructions walk you through two temp settings, it takes about an hour and a half. I placed half a bag of the hickory pellets to do this and still had enough left to smoke a chicken.

Smoking a whole chicken

I picked up a chicken from the grocery store, rubbed it with oil and the Trager seasoning they gave us with the grill. The app had great instructions on how to cook this.

I set the grill temp and the probe temp and left it cooking for 4 hours.

The chicken came out delicious! My only suggestion is to set the probe at the desired internal temp instead of what the app tells you. I should have set it at 165 instead of 160 because the temp did not increase later like it said it would. Look at that golden brown color!
