Mexico Excursion: San Sebastian del Oeste

Our next excursion in Puerto Vallarta was up in the Sierra Madre mountain range in a town called San Sebastian. This historic Mexican town dates back to 1605, silver miners lived here and worked the region’s natural resources looking for silver. This tour was fun and different. We were able to see a whole bunch of historic Mexican culture.

Our tour guide was great and he told stories about the history of San Sebastian and the economy at the time when the miners lived here. He passed around some old artifacts to us all on the bus.

The drive up to the town took about an hour and a half. It was very scenic. Our first stop was for a coffee tasting at Cafe de Altura, La Quinta Mari. The coffee is from a coffee plantation that dates back to the nineteenth century.

They also had fruit trees here and we ate some delicious fruit from them. I cannot remember what they called them but they looked like lemons and tasted like oranges. Delicious and refreshing!

We didnt purchase any coffee, it was tasty with a little cinnamon flavor, but we opted for the “boston” baked beans and corn nut candy. So good!

Next we took a nice walk through the town. Many of the town’s original structures and cultural traditions still stand today, it was a wonderful historic experience.

Next was the historic San Sebastian church located right in the center of town. This church was beautiful!

We went into this little museum that told a story about a promenent family that settled this town and still lives here today. One of the relatives of this family gave the tour. It was interesting but not my favorite.

We explored some of the local shops. I purchased a beautiful handpainted magnet of the San Sebastian town. So many unique things here.

And check out these Michelada beers. . . delish!!

Our final stop of the day was at a Tequila Distillery for lunch and a Tequila tasting.

Lunch was served upstairs overseeing the beautiful Sierra Madre mountains.

We had salads and an assortment of salsas to start. The meal was Carne Asada Fajitas, potatoes, and guacamole, so delicious. The dessert was a cheesecake type thing, it was ok.

The last thing on the itinerary was the tequila tasting. The tequila was good but not as good as the other tasting we did. All and all it was a fun time.

After a long day it was time to hop back on the tour van and head to the hotel. I hope you enjoyed tripping with me to this historic Mexican town!
