New Mexico Green Chile Fall Harvest
Every year since I was a little girl I can remember going with my parents and grandparents to pick fresh green Chile from the field. My grandma would bring it home and roast it in the oven and peel and freeze it for the rest of the year.
Today, I find a local farmer and go by a sack and get it roasted all at once. Still a wonderful tradition and provides the tastiest Chile to enjoy in so many ways.
This year I went to Wagner Farms in Corrales, NM. This place was pretty busy with everyone stocking up on their green Chile.
Wagner Farms not only has Chile but some yummy pastries and other great produce.
Time to pick out the Chile. Now, if I was at a grocery store, I’d go with the hot or x-hot. But I’ve been here before and the medium is just right. (the X-hot was too hot to eat last time I tried it.)
Picked up a sack of ‘Big Jim Medium’ and headed out to roast it. Total: $45 w/ roasting. You definitely cant skip the roasting!
The smell of fresh green chile roasting is the best smell in the world! It may not be how my grandma does it, but its still wonderful!
Once its done they open the roaster cage and slide it into a hefty bag to take home. And thats when the fun begins. Most people peel and then freeze, but I find it keeps a better flavor if I keep the skins on and freeze. I just peel each one as I cook them.
Look at all that chile. . .mmmmmmm.
I kept some out and made some delicious Chile Rellenos. So delicious!
New Mexico in the fall is certainly filled with wonderful memories and traditions. If your ever in New Mexico make sure you try the Chile!
